The Sycamore Education Foundation (SEF) is pleased to announce a new scholarship opportunity that will be available to Sycamore High School students in the graduating class of 2020. The Lyons Family has established the Donna J. (Lyons) Bukowski Memorial Scholarship to honor her life and legacy.
Donna was a member of the Sycamore High School Graduating Class o
f 1984. She was an active member of the Sycamore FFA Chapter where she focused on greenhouse production of flowers and ornamental plants. An entrepreneur while still in high school, she built a small greenhouse on her parents’ farm and began a small business designing wedding flowers. She also made and sold decorative plaques at local flea markets and fairs. Her drive and success resulted in her earning the FFA’s highest honor when she received the National FFA Floriculture Award.
Donna’s passion for business and entrepreneurship ultimately led to a career in interior design, which she started by going door-to-door selling wallpaper and drapery. She later owned and operated several interior design businesses including, “Jennifer’s” in Sycamore, “Stephen Joseph” in Chicago, and “Interior Style” in Kankakee, Ill the latter two with her husband, Stephen.
“Donna was always a standout in our family and it showed in her success as an adult,” said Dawn Lyons-Dean, sister of Donna. “She not only succeeded, she wanted others to succeed, too.”
This scholarship will be awarded to a graduating SHS senior who demonstrates leadership ability and a passion for business and entrepreneurship. Selection will be based on academic achievement, demonstrated leadership, and a focus on business.
“This scholarship is a wonderful opportunity for Sycamore High School graduates pursuing a degree in business,” said Lauren Holtz, SEF Executive Director. “We are so grateful to the Lyons Family for establishing this scholarship in honor of their late daughter.”
Sycamore students can apply for these scholarships by accessing the application forms through the Naviance system. Those interested in contributing to the Donna J.
